Happy New Year!

We wish you a Happy New Year! 2008 is almost here, and we hope to see you @ the library for all the exciting, fun programs we are planning for the new year. Don't forget that the library will be closing at 6:00 p.m. on December 31st, will be closed on January 1st, and will reopen at 10:00 a.m. on January 2nd. Have a safe holiday and we'll see you soon @ the library!

Writing Contest Winners!

The John's Island Regional Library is proud to announce the winners of the Writing Contest for Island High School Students held as part of The Charleston County Big Read. Students wrote papers on Independence vs. Love Relationships in Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. All winners are students at St. John's High School.

First Came Got Game? Now, Get Ready for Game On!


If you like to play online games, don't miss Game On! This exclusive program is limited to 7 or 8 teens (depending on computer availability) and does not count against your two computer sessions a day! You must have a library card with Internet access and be in grades 6-12. First come, first served.

Game On! will be held on Tuesdays in October, beginning on October 9, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. A second session will be held from 4:30-5:30 for a new group of teens. Meet Ms. Nancy and your friends in the Conference Room/Computer Lab and Game On!

Did You Miss Got Game?

We held our first online gaming program last Thursday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in our computer lab/conference room. Seven teens and Ms. Nancy enjoyed sharing favorite gaming websites and challenging each other to online duels. Participation is limited to eight teens, so mark your calendars for our next Got Game? program on Tuesday, September 25, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. First come, first served! Remember-you must have Internet privileges on your library card to participate.

Don't miss Game On! in October--our online gaming program will become weekly on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. starting October 9th.

All during the month of September, the library will be encouraging all Charleston County residents and business owners to get a library card. Already have a library card but can't find it? Think you've lost your library card? Now is the time to get a replacement card--they are FREE during September in celebration of Library Card Sign-Up Month! Come by the circulation desk today to get or replace your library card. The yellow library card above has been replaced with a new design with lowcountry scenes. The new library card includes a wallet-sized and small key chain card--now using your library card is as easy as grabbing your keys!

Are You Ready to Go Back to School?

Are you ready for another school year? Be sure you're ready to get the most out of your library. Do you have a library card? If not, come by the library and sign up for one today! All Charleston County residents qualify for a free library card. If you've had a library card in the past at any of the Charleston County Public Library branches and you can't find your card now, you'll want to get a replacement card. Replacement cards are just $1.00 and our new library cards are really two cards in one! Each new library card has a small card for your keychain and a regular wallet-sized card. Two for the price of one! What a deal!

Teens, remember we'll need some form of identification from you before issuing a replacement card. Come by the circulation or reference desks to learn more about new and replacement library cards or call (843) 559-1945.

First time teen Internet users: Don't forget that if you're under 18 you'll need a parent or guardian's signature on our Internet Acceptable Use Agreement form before you will be able to use our Internet computers. Forms are available at all library service desks.

John's Island Winners Announced!

CONGRATULATIONS

to our teen summer reading winners!

Brandon Decker (in the blue striped shirt) was our Club 1250 iPod Shuffle winner! Brandon was randomly chosen out of the 35 teens who read at least 1250 pages during the program and became members of the John's Island Club 1250! He received a green iPod Shuffle and a $15.00 iTunes gift card.

Ren Fish (in the purple jersey) was our iReview iPod Shuffle winner! His name was randomly drawn from the 56 entries resulting from the 56 book reviews written by teens during the program. You can read most of the iReviews in previous posts on this blog. Ren received an orange iPod Shuffle and a $15.00 iTunes gift card.

"This book is about a young girl named Cidny Gibson who was very attracted to this boy named Bobby Wallace. Cidny loved everything about him. She finally had somebody she could call her own. Cidny learned that her best friend Jamee Wills used to date Bobby and found out how he abused her Jamee did everything in her power to warn her about him but Cidny didn't listen she had to found out for her own as time went on Cidny notice Bobby's behavior toward her he began acting very strange and Cidny grew scareder and worried every day til one night at a party Cidny and Bobby had a disagreement and he began to choke her luckly her friends were there to help Cidny told her mother everything she knew her mother even broke it off with her boyfriend and they were begging a new life."

"This book is about two sister's who are haveing family problems. With their father not around things are going downhill then one day Darcy the oldest sister has a compele stranger following her and a scary note left on her desk. Turns out that the stranger was Darcy father and the note was from this boy named Bobby Wallace. With all going on Darcy's little sister Jamie can't handle all of it she then starts to push her love ones away and starts hanging with this boy, Bobby Wallace who has doing all these crazy things that she shouldn't be doing. One day Jamie ran away from home and was informed about it Darcy remembered a place that the family used to go to when they were a family, in the mountains. So they looked and discovered Jamies body she was still breathing and they rushed her to the hospital and it turned out to be fine afterwords and the family was going to try to work out their differences."

"This book is about two old best friends they used to do everything together until Darcy started hanging with new friends and Brisanna didn't approve of her decision. Darcy was going out with this boy named Hakeem Rondell. Brisanna saw how happy the two were and she was going to break them up by takeing interest in Hakeem. Darcy wasn't about to go for that she had to move quick and stop her. She came to a conclusion that she wasn't going follow up Brisanna the conclusion came out fine."

Blood is Thicker by Paul Langan & D.M. Blackwell
"This book was about a young man and his family who moved to Detroit wis his uncel and his family because Hakeem Randell's father was sick and could not work to support his family. Hakeem learned that he would be helping his uncel at the store for the summer. He also learned that he would have to share a small bedroom with this cousin who were once childhood friends. Hakeem learned his cousin's anger and hateful comments towards him and the two quickly became enimes. While liveing in Detroit Hakeem meet a pretty young girl who use to talk to his cousin Savon. Quickly Hakeem became very attracted to her, but was told she was no good and hang with the wrong crowd. He also learned that his cousin Savon would sneak out at night one night Hakeem followed him to this club for young teens. Hakeem had learned that his cousin Savon was a rapper and was making money. Savon told his cousin about his father never listiens's to him or come see him play. Hakeem was willing to help out and try to make a change between the two. At the end the results came out good and they were friends again.

"This book is about a young man named Roylin Bailey a new student had come to Bluford named Korie Archer. Roylin took interest in her as soon as he saw her, doing his best to impress he begins to tell lies and gets caught up. Roylin was real good friends with his next door neighbor he would do anything for Roylin. One day Korie took Roylin to the mall to show him this necklace she loved and wanted so badly and Roylin had made that he was going to buy it even though it was expensive to get the money he stole from his best friend and bought the necklace Roylin thought things was going great after that until his girlfriend (Korie) started seeing someone else and his best friend had disappear only person who was the janitor was out to get him he mad Roylin do all his chore and one day Roylin discovered his friend was put in a home the janitor was fooling him all along and he broke it off with Korie he became a new person and made friends and was seeing thing differently now."

"This book was about a young man named Ben, who just learned he would be moveing out of his aunt house and live with his mom and her new husband and would be going to a new school at Bluford High. Ben don't like the idea that he has to move and neither does his aunt who took care of them. Ben then learns that his new stepdad is a drunk and a abusive person. His stepdad turns to be ugly and mean and begins hitting them. At school teachers ask questions and friends try to help out but Ben just pushes them away until his principal Mrs. Spencer becomes worried and calls his aunt who was in North Carolina looking after her father. She then gets Ben to confess everything he knew and what was happening while she was away and calls the police to have them noteify about the problems."

"This book is about young named Tyray he used to pick on another boy named Darrell. Until Darrell change faces and turn things around he embarressed and huminated Tyray in front of everybody. Tyray who used to get lots of respect from kids who was scared, now was getting punked. Tyray needed to get revenge quick and the only way he know how was a gun. Knowing it was wrong he had no choice was going to kill Darrell. That night of his plan he couldn't go through when he finally faced Darrell the two decide to let the past be the past and move on and get through this. They became friends and Tyray got helped and was starting over."

The Bully
"This book was about a young man named Darrell who just moved from Philadelphia with his mom to California in with his uncle. Darrell didn't want to go but he had no choice. It was very difficult for Darrell to make friends. He'd try being nice to a young man named Tyray, but little did he know, he didn't know that Tyray was going to push and bully him around and keep taking his lunch money so Darrell found a way to gain strength and power to face his bully."

"This book is about a young man named Martin Luna facing serious trouble with an old homeboy of his who is hunting him. Martin has to make a big decision and try to stop him before it's to late pushing everybody who cares and worries about him. "Matter of Trust" is about Darcy and Hakeem are a good couple, but one of Darcy's old friends try to steal him. Now she is really mad at her. Darcy is still mad at her father for leaving her mom, sister, and grandmother. Matter of Trust is a good book."

Shattered by Paul Langan

"Shattered is about Darcy is miserable because her grandmother had died, her parents are yelling alot, and Hakeem isn't around alot. She is scared to tell Hakeem about Brian and her going out. Now she find out Hakeem has a new girlfriend."

Both books are part of the Bluford series.
